The Parent’s Homework Helper: LearningExpress Library

Picture this: It’s 7 PM. Your 4th grader is stuck on a geometry worksheet, frowning at a question about angles. You think you remember the difference between scalene and isosceles triangles… but you’re not 100% sure. Sound familiar?

That’s where LearningExpress Library’s Educator Resources Center comes in—a free, easy-to-use toolkit that helps kids practice, learn, and improve in math, reading, and writing, all while giving you the support you need to guide them.

For Elementary Students (Grades 4-5): Building Confidence, One Skill at a Time

The Elementary School Learning Center is designed to help kids strengthen core skills with interactive practice sets, instant feedback, and clear explanations.

Example: Mastering 4th Grade Geometry

Let’s say your child needs help with classifying shapes. Here’s how it works:

1. Start a Practice Set

   • Choose Geometry Practice from the Mathematics Skills list.

   

   • Pick a test. You can print the questions for offline use, but it does not include all the features and functionality of the online version and may offer fewer questions. For a complete experience, take the online version.

   

2. Answer & Learn

   • Mark your answer by clicking on the circle next to your choice, and continue through the practice set. You can always change your answer to any question by clicking on a new answer choice, or you can skip the question altogether. When ready, hit SCORE MY TEST.

   • The instant score report shows which skills need more work and resource recommendations.

   • Click VIEW ANSWERS to see detailed explanations for every question—even the ones they got right!

3. Try Again & Improve

   • Retake similar questions or move to the next skill.

   • Learner Mode allows them to see explanations as they progress, which is ideal for first-time learners.

💡Parent Tip: Use Practice Mode for test-like conditions or Learner Mode for guided study sessions.

For Middle Schoolers (Grades 6-8): Leveling Up

Older students get more advanced practice, plus test-prep tools and in-depth tutorials for state assessments.

Example: Conquering Ratios in 7th Grade Math

If your child struggles with ratios, they can:

1. Take a microlesson on a specific topic, in this case, ratios. Microlessons provide focused, engaging instruction by combining clear explanations of key concepts with interactive practice problems. Many also include brief instructional videos that visually demonstrate the material, helping students grasp challenging topics through multiple learning styles. This compact format delivers complete lessons in digestible chunks; perfect for reinforcing classroom learning or tackling homework challenges

• • Find the microlessons in the main menu of the Learning Center. Scroll until you find the topic you would like to study and click Launch.

     

     2. Or for a more comprehensive approach, the child can complete a step-by-step Math tutorial for their grade level.

• • Take the diagnostic pre-test to see which areas need the most work, or jump to the desired topic.

💡 Parent Tip: Have your child spend extra time on their pre-test results—it’s the fastest way to target problem areas!

How to Get Started:

1. Visit LearningExpress Library, or you can find the Educator Resources Learning Center in our A-Z Resources list.

2. Users will need to make an EBSCOlearning account to access the learning resources. To register, click the “Sign In/Register” link on the upper right side of the library homepage or the homepage of any center. Click the “Register” button to register as a new user, find our library, and enter your information in the required fields, and then click “Register.” You can also use an existing Google account to sign in—just click on the “Sign in with Google” link and follow the directions.

3. Once you make an account, select “Elementary” or “Middle School” Center.

4. Pick a subject and dive in—even 10 minutes a day helps!
