Bring Your Vision to Life
After months of gray skies and frozen ground, spring has finally arrived, and it’s time to turn our attention back to the outdoors. Have you been dreaming of a garden path lined with arched trellises and climbing roses? A kitchen garden with raised vegetable beds and fresh herbs right outside your back door? Perhaps a rain garden that handles spring downpours while attracting butterflies? Or maybe a pollinator-friendly yard with a birdbath and native wildflowers? A little research can go a long way toward turning those ideas into projects you can actually tackle, and knowing where to begin can make those big outdoor ideas feel a lot more manageable.
Sow ideas with Home Improvement Source
Research like that starts with the right tools. EBSCO's Home Improvement Source is a searchable online database filled with home improvement magazines, reference materials, and downloadable eBooks. While it covers everything from plumbing to woodworking, it's also a great resource for gardening, landscaping, and outdoor design inspiration.

Inside, you'll find full-text articles and content from popular publications like HGTV Magazine, This Old House, Fine Homebuilding, and Mother Earth Living. Whether you're planning a major backyard renovation like a flagstone patio with a fire pit, or just looking for simple ways to refresh your flowerbeds with drought-tolerant perennials, the database lets you explore ideas that match your climate or budget.
Browse by Topic for Inspiration
One of the easiest ways to get started is by browsing by topic. Categories like Gardening, Outdoor, Landscape Design, and Green Design can help you uncover projects and ideas you might not have considered before, like xeriscaping or companion planting.

Not sure what you're looking for? You can also explore all topics by keyword. In the example below, a search for the word "Garden" pulls up results across multiple popular categories. Click any link, and the database immediately brings back relevant content, such as magazine articles, step-by-step guides, and full ebooks. From there, you can apply additional filters like publication date, source, or document type to narrow your results. Browsing by topic can be helpful when you know you want to improve your yard but aren't yet sure which keywords are right.

Find an article you'd like to return to later? Click the flag icon to the right of the article title. That article will be saved to your session's Save folder, located in the left sidebar. Planning to come back after comparing a few different landscaping concepts? Create a free MyEBSCO account. Your saved articles and searches will stay with you beyond your current session, sync across devices, and travel from your laptop to your tablet or phone. It's an easy way to keep inspiration organized while you're still gathering ideas.

Browse Popular Magazines
Another way to search Home Improvement Source is by browsing individual publications. If you already enjoy magazines like This Old House, HGTV Magazine, or Fine Homebuilding, you can search within those titles specifically to find seasonal outdoor projects, landscaping trends, and step-by-step tutorials.
To add a magazine, go to the Publication Authority tab in the left sidebar menu. From there, you can browse titles alphabetically or search for magazines by topic. Try typing in a subject like "Landscaping," "Gardening," or "Outdoor Living," and the database will pull up relevant magazines and guides.
Through a quick keyword search, you can pull together articles from multiple publications in seconds, saving you hours of flipping pages of printed magazines.
Browse with Downloadable eBooks
Once inspiration turns into planning, the Home Improvement eBook Collection can help you dive deeper into specific projects and techniques. These resources are ideal when you want more than a magazine article, like full chapters on soil preparation or garden bed layouts.
Books will appear in your regular search results, but you can also filter specifically for them. Start by typing a topic keyword like "landscape." For this example, we'll use "Landscape and Garden Design."

The database will then suggest related sub-topic bubbles and featured eBook content to help guide your research. Let's select one of the books to preview.

You can view the book file in a PDF format or as EPUB. For the best experience, choose EPUB because the text reflows to fit your screen, adjusts for readability, and works well with accessibility tools. PDFs are essentially static images: less responsive, especially on phones or tablets. The book record will also show how much of the book you're allowed to download.

When you open the eBook, the table of contents opens by default on the right side. From there, you can jump directly to specific chapters, search within the book for keywords, or find a page to download.
